Babe and Me

For those who love baseball collecting and played little league (or you just like kid adventures), this one is a good read.  How I had wished as a kid I could have gone back in time travelling to answer those things that never had a definitive “yes it did happen” or “no it didn’t.”  Well this book is a “series” book of sorts as there are other editions, one a RA favorite as well!  This book was focused on whether Babe Ruth actually pointed to the outfield bleachers before he actually hit the homerun in the third game of the 1932 World Series as a player on the NY Yankees vs. the Chicago Cubs.  Dan Gutman is the author of Babe and Me.  Little Joe Stoshack is a young boy who is able to travel back in time when he holds an old baseball card.  This time he holds the card when his father, who is estranged from his mother, visits to take the card back he gave to Joey.  Joey’s dad is “down and out on his luck.”  Having just lost his latest job, Joey’s dad needs the Ruth card to sell as a means to make some money as the card is valued at $10,000.  As he is about to give the card back to his father, his father learns of Joey’s special ability to travel back in time, and so begins the adventure.  Get ready to time travel to the 1932 World Series and learn if Babe actually called the “home run” that was heard around the world.  We also learn more about Joey and his father’s relationship and how it changes based on what Joey’s father can do to try and change history (in an effort to save his family from their death because of the Holocaust).  A quick read with lots of things for kids to think about – using your imagination, dreaming, helping others, and growing up.  Get this one for the young cousin or nephew/niece who adores dreaming.
