Well another comic goes and shares their story about making
it in the life of comedy. This one by
Mindy Kaling, from “The Office” fame, in her book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (And Other Concerns). The book (which I listened to) is quite
funny. She shares her life’s journey from
college (Dartmouth) to growing up in an Indian household and all of the funny things
her family did growing up. She shares
her experiences of moving to NYC, serving as a nanny for an uber-rich divorced
mother who hired her to watch her two children.
Her stories regarding job interviews were the best, loved how she met
with the hiring agent and ended up embarrassing herself by the answers she
shared. Mindy chronicles her hiring by
Greg Daniels at “The Office” and the time when she was asked to go home, which
she thought twice about doing while she was employed in her dream job. Mindy also shares stories about love,
friendship, living in Brooklyn, her top 20 favorite comedic moments on the big
screen, her two week run as a guest writer for Saturday Night Live, and her
thoughts on clothes, food, and adventures in Hollywood. She comes across as a self-effacing young
woman who uses her own “losses” in life to connect to others. Overall a funny read. Not as good as Tina Fey’s, but hey, Mindy
isn’t asking me to rate that. It does
get a bit monotonous her constant knocking of herself, but beyond that, it’s
light, witty, and gives a good insight to how hard the world of tv/movies
really is. It is a quick read as well.
