Miss Tizzy

Great messages don’t need to be long stories with complex characters, hard to follow storylines, etc.  They can actually be short and sweat!  They were in this beautifully told children’s story, Miss Tizzy by Libba Moore Gray.  Miss Tizzy, an elderly woman, connects with the neighborhood children by engaging them on their terms.  Miss Tizzy wears a bright purple hat with a flower in it and high-top green tennis shoes which brings a smile to the kids.  Each day of the week she offers a new activity for the children, such as baking cookies in her kitchen, having a puppet show using old socks, creating a musical band walking through the streets, drawing pictures for other elderly adults, playing dress up, and roller-skating at the park.  The children have a role model for “fun” who teaches them to enjoy life.  But one day, Miss Tizzy gets sick and stays in bed.  What happens?  The kids bake cookies for her, put on a puppet show outside her window, play music outside her window, draw pictures for her, and sing for her when under the moonlight.  And of course she sits in her bed, loving it!  Ah, role modeling love and fun and then receiving it back from the youth!  What a nice book sending the message to enjoy life and engage with others.  Great book to illustrate to kids life is what we make it.
